In 1942, the Italian Government commissioned Ilvo Fontana to produce a tailored-made watch that would become the pride of the Italian navy pilots. Those distinctive watches had to meet the navy highest quality standards as well as very precise specifications, and had to be big enough to be read instantly in any weather and light condition. Production did not come about and the design remained on paper alone for over 50 years.

Italo Fontana, designer and grandson of Ilvo Fontana, discovered the sheaf of documents regarding this project to manufacture watches specially designed for the navy forces. The drawings gave Italo the idea to create U-BOAT – big hand-crafted timepieces characterized by its strong identity and distinctive design.
